The convenience of travelling in complete independence is gaining more and more followers. Every summer, more families join in on two-wheeled tourism, as carrying the “house” with them has many advantages.
Going on holiday to a campsite or camping in a permitted area is always an option chosen by those who want to escape the typical hotel holidays and want to manage their schedules, and with children it is always a very fun option.
But it is not just about putting our belongings in the caravan and leaving; we must take into account the following recommendations so that the trip is a complete success:
For those of you who have never gone camping or rented a motorhome, we have a series of recommendations in detail:
Preparing the trip : First of all, study the area you want to go to carefully. If you choose to camp, you will have to make sure that where you want to go there are areas that allow camping, and if you go camping, look at which ones allow access to motorhomes. On the Internet you can find some apps that have a lot of tips with recommendations, advice and above all information coming directly from the travelers themselves. If instead of a motorhome, you choose to make the trip in a Volkswagen type van, a camper van, or a Westfalia camper, it will also be important to find appropriate tips for this type of vehicle.
Avoiding breakdowns : If you are wondering if there is the option of a replacement motorhome in the event of a breakdown, the answer is no. For this reason, depending on the degree of breakdown, it can mean the end of your holiday. Make sure you check it before leaving, especially if it is a second-hand or rental motorhome. Normally, companies that rent motorhomes have them up to date, but it doesn’t hurt to make sure. Also check that the vehicle, whether it is a motorhome, van and/or camper, has insurance and if it is fully comprehensive, even better.
Parking : In almost all cities, you can find adapted car parks and campsites with very reasonable rates for motorhomes. One of the things to keep in mind is the security of the parking lots you choose. If you have not yet arrived at your destination, it is advisable to park in service areas that have a 24-hour gas station with a cafeteria, in order to avoid possible theft.
Essential material : After making a list of all the material we may need, if we go in a motorhome, the list will be shorter than if we go camping, since motorhomes normally already have the minimum material for cooking and personal hygiene.
For motorhome :
1. A sleeve to fill the water tank.
2. Electrical connection cable to be able to make connection from WC.
3. Leveling wedge to properly level the motorhome.
4. Melamine tableware, since it is lightweight, does not break and does not make noise, the latter being important when travelling on a bumpy road.
Provide rescue and protection items, such as a small first aid kit, sunscreen, walkie talkies, since we may be going to an area that does not have coverage or plugs to charge the mobile phone, and candles.
Entertainment : If it is a family getaway and the children are small, we will have to think about bringing board games, tablets and/or DVDs or USBs with films. If we get caught in traffic, it will be the best way to liven up the wait.
Supplies : It is best to leave the country with only the essentials, since this will prevent you from carrying too much weight, and buy everything else during the trip or once you reach your destination. Nowadays, you can always find a shop where you can buy supplies.
If you want to try it out, there are two motorhome and camper rental companies in Andorra. One is Ifrent and the other is We-camper.
