Tips for traveling in a camper or motorhome

The convenience of travelling in complete independence is gaining more and more followers. Every summer, more families join in on the adventure on two wheels, as carrying the “house” with them has many advantages.

But it is not just about putting our belongings inside the caravan and leaving; we must take into account the following recommendations so that the trip is a complete success:

  • Avoiding breakdowns : If you are wondering if there is the option of a replacement motorhome in the event of a breakdown, the answer is no. For this reason, depending on the degree of breakdown, it can mean the end of your holiday. Make sure you check it before leaving , especially if it is a second-hand or rental motorhome. Normally, companies that rent motorhomes have them up to date, but it doesn’t hurt to make sure. Also check that the vehicle, whether it is a motorhome, van and/or camper, has insurance and if it is fully comprehensive, even better.
  • Parking : In almost all cities, you can find adapted car parks and campsites with very reasonable rates for motorhomes. One of the things to keep in mind is the security of the parking lots you choose. If you have not yet arrived at your destination, it is advisable to park in service areas that have a 24-hour gas station with a cafeteria , and thus avoid possible theft.
  • Preparing the trip : As soon as we have decided on the destination for our getaway, we will have to look at the stops we will make to see if they have adapted places. On the Internet you can find some apps that have a lot of tips with recommendations, advice and above all information coming directly from the travelers themselves. If instead of a motorhome, we choose to make the trip in a Volkswagen type van, a camper van , or a Westfalia camper , it will also be important to find tips suitable for this type of vehicle.
  • Essential material :
    1. A hose to fill the water tank.
    2. Electrical connection cable to be able to make connection from WC.
    3. Leveling wedge to properly level the motorhome.
    4. Melamine tableware , since it is lightweight, does not break and does not make noise, the latter being important when traveling on a bumpy road.
  • Entertainment : If it is a family getaway and the children are small, we will have to think about bringing board games, a tablet and/or DVD or USB with films. If we get caught in traffic, it will be the best way to liven up the wait.
  • Supplies: It is best to leave the country with only the essentials, since this will prevent you from carrying too much weight, and buy everything else during the trip or once you reach your destination. Nowadays, you can always find a shop where you can buy supplies.
