Living on rent

Renting an apartment may not seem like what we imagined when we were young and had our heads full of ideas of grandeur and wealth, but if we look at the pros and cons of apartments we begin to see that it may be smarter to rent an apartment than to live in a house . Depending on the person or family situation, renting may suit you much more than anything else.

  • Less financial burdens: Renters do not have as many obligations as homeowners. Buying a property requires dealing with maintenance costs (often unexpected), various taxes, and other responsibilities that are normally included in the rental.
  • Security: One of the advantages of renting is that many buildings have some kind of security installed (cameras, intercom, door with code…). We can also install security or alarms at home, but we will have to pay for that ourselves.
  • Not having to worry about the installations: we can rest easy and we won’t have to check that the boiler is working properly, or change many things in the house if they don’t work or break.
  • Free repairs: If your blinds break down, or you have plumbing problems, many rental apartments (either by the owner or the company that manages them) will take care of the repairs. It’s as easy as making a phone call and they’ll come and fix it for you. And what’s better, they probably won’t charge you for it (unless it was due to your negligence).
  • Flexibility: Let’s say you find a great job opportunity, but it’s far from home (or worse, out of the country!). Living on rent means you can pack your bags and leave relatively quickly, much more quickly than if you had to sell a property.
  • Building maintenance: Most apartment buildings also have a service included in the rent for the maintenance of the building and how it looks. If there are plants, lighting… we will always keep it presentable and well cared for. You can enjoy the weekends without having to water the plants!
  • Not having to shovel snow: It’s true that this only applies to certain times of the year and depending on the neighborhood where we live, but if we are lucky enough to live in one of them, it will be one less headache for us.

Owning a home may seem like an idyllic scenario, almost like a dream, but we must take into consideration the benefits of renting that I mentioned above. So, when deciding whether to buy or rent, you have to think carefully!
