How to prepare for an internship: essential requirements

During studies, training internships are an essential period for both personal and professional development. Training internships in a company are a unique opportunity to deepen knowledge, but also to put into practice everything we have learned and prepare us for our next incorporation into the world of work.
It is very common for a training center’s training plan to include a portion of face-to-face training and for the student to be sent to do training internships in a company.
But what are the essential requirements to be able to do a training internship in Andorra? Do we have to subscribe to a specific insurance to be able to do it?

Training stays in Andorra

Both Andorran students and legally resident foreigners enrolled in national or foreign educational centres outside the Principality of Andorra can carry out a training stay in an Andorran company or public entity to meet the objectives of the training stay by formalising a training internship contract.

Requirements for the authorization of the Training Internship Agreement

In order to undertake training internships, the student will need to formalise a Training Internship Agreement to prove that the internship will be carried out in compliance with the following conditions:

  • The training internship contract must be formalized between the educational center, the company and the student himself if he is of legal age or is emancipated and, in the case of being a minor, by his legal representative and under the supervision of a company tutor who must plan and carry out his training action in coordination with the tutor teacher designated by the center.
  • A study plan that will establish the objectives to be achieved, as well as the places in the organization where the activities of the training stay in the company will be carried out.
  • The student must prove that he or she has health coverage from the Caixa Andorrana de Seguridad Social or private insurance that guarantees equivalent coverage.
  • Civil Liability insurance covering the entire training period.
  • For international internships, students must take out civil liability insurance, accident insurance with a repatriation clause and, depending on the type of training stay, criminal insurance.

Some companies even require a certificate of liability before signing an internship agreement.

Types of policies for interns

There are different types of policies recommended and often mandatory for interns such as:

How do Civil and Criminal Liability policies differ from Accident Insurance?
Civil Liability covers damages to third parties that may be caused by the student, while Accident Insurance covers damages that may be suffered by the student.

Civil and Criminal Liability Insurance for company internships

Within the scope of Civil Liability, a specific type of insurance policy is used to cover damages that a student may cause during his or her internship. This type of insurance is contracted individually, and like other Civil Liability insurance, internship insurance has an insured amount for Civil Liability coverage for Operations. These generally include a civil and criminal defense coverage clause.
As it is a Civil Liability insurance, the damages that will be covered will be those caused to third parties, both physical and material, but not those that may be suffered by the student himself, who would be covered by another type of policy: Accident Insurance for company internships.

Accident Insurance for company internships

There is a specific type of Accident Insurance, which is used to cover possible damages that a student may suffer during the development of an internship in a company.
This type of insurance is contracted individually, and as with other accident policies, it includes disability coverage and then optional capital is added for other death coverage.

Health Care Insurance

In the event that you do not have health insurance, and given the fact that it is mandatory to be able to do training internships in Andorra, you must have private insurance that guarantees coverage equivalent to that offered by the Caixa Andorrana de Seguridad Social. For this reason, in addition to Civil Liability Insurance, it is generally common to take out Health Assistance insurance with a repatriation clause.
But very often the most common unforeseen events arise and that is why we must not forget safety, especially at work. For both a professional and a student on an internship, feeling safe in their daily life is essential to be able to develop satisfactorily.

At ASSAP Seguros we recommend our Civil Protection policy or the Expense Reimbursement Insurance , but if your training stay will ultimately take place outside Andorra, you can always consult our Travel Assistance Insurance for extra coverage.
